Planning Your Journey to Interview

We all know first impressions count. Being late for interview can seriously hamper your chance of getting the job and at the very least will not make a good starting impression on your potential employer!

Knowing you have prepared for the journey ahead will help relax your nerves, build your confidence and allow extra time to focus on the task at hand. Take a look at our checklist and ensure you give yourself the best possible chance of securing your dream job!

Our checklist

  • Preparation is key!

Time permitting, it’s a good idea to do an advanced trial run of your journey, then you can plan your timings accordingly. If travelling by car, this also gives you the chance to scope out what parking will be available. Are there planned roadworks? Will you have enough fuel for the journey?  If travelling by bus or train, double check your route, do you have to make any changes? How will you get from the station to the office? It’s well worth checking your route and have a backup plan in place should any unexpected delays occur.

If you don’t have time for a trial run, plan out your route on the satnav, look at travel timetables, plan your timings and consider rush hour delays. Your wifi or 4G might dip out, so consider printing out directions in advance, and call us old fashioned, but it’s always a good idea to have an up to date road map in the car.

  • Have you checked all the details?

Does the company your interviewing for have multiple offices? They could be counties apart so check you are travelling to the right office! If you are unsure, its not too late to double check with your HR contact. Ensure you have the name and contact details of the person conducting the interview saved on your phone should you need to reach them on the day of interview.

  • Parking

Do you know what parking will be available? Perhaps you have been advised to use the visitor or overflow car park? Calculate how much extra time you’ll need to walk from your car to the office? If you plan on using a car park you might need change.

  • Be early – but not too early

Aim to be pleasantly punctual, plan to arrive 15 minutes before the interview is due to start. Any earlier than might seem eager but is likely to put your interviewer off. 15 minutes will give you enough time to check in a reception, use the toilet and take a few minutes to relax, collect your thoughts and mentally prepare.

  • Check the weather

With a bit of luck, the weather will be clear of rain or storms on your day of interview, but it’s worth checking the forecast just in case! If it’s going to be pouring, prepare for possible delays on the road and public transport services, and don’t forget your umbrella!

  • If you know you will be late

Worst case scenario – your miss your train, you get lost, your child gets sick, you realise you are not going to make it to your interview on time. There is still time to recover if you act quickly and in a succinct manner. Contact your interviewer in the first instance, be realistic of your time of arrival and be truthful! It’s always better to reach out, take responsibility and be sincere in your apology. Accept the interviewer may have to reschedule for another time and date.

Good luck! We hope you found this guide to your interview journey helpful and we wish you all the best in your interview!
